I'm curious what locals think about the Echo cafe in (I think) the Eliot neighborhood. I am looking for a nice down-home place and wonder if they fit the bill. I've driven by lots of times but am hesitant to try it without a recommendation. Anyone?
I like Echo, and their food is creative and good, and while it is somewhat casual, it doesn't have a "down home" type atmosphere in my opinion. It is a cozy place at night with candles, especially if you get a booth. The menu changes and is inventive...definitely worth a try if you haven't been in. The place is always busy, so that's a good sign.
I recently tried the Wonder Cafe (at Wonder Ballroom) around the corner on Russell and I found it a little cozier and more "down to earth" fare (juicy burgers and excellent french fries) if that is what you are seeking.
I liked both places. Only tried them once each. While the food is more "down home" at Wonder, I thought the atmosphere was not so much. More on the artsy-snooty side, but probably mostly to blame were the wait-staff.
We love the Wonder Cafe! Yes, we did get the artsy-snooty feel at first BUT have been many times and it really is more of a cozy neighborhood laid back friendly good food and good atmosphere type place. Good selection of wine and GREAT prices for bottles. The wait staff has always been great and really take care of the patrons. Wednesday night is drag night for the wait staff (men wait staff wear dresses) it's a hoot! The roasted nut appetizer is GREAT, as are the fries, we have tried most items and they are all very good. Prices are better than Echo (we still like Echo, but it's a much different environment.) Thanks.
